Giving Back to the Community: 12 Hours of Columnstore Knowledge in 2019

I have always loved the idea of giving back. I can’t even describe how much I have learned and keep on learning from the community, through the blog posts, videos, lectures & conversations at the conferences. I am forever indebted to those generous people who decided to share their knowledge so that everyone can benefit from it.

I have created my blog post with the idea of sharing my knowledge with the others, and I thought it is the time to do the next step – which is to give a little bit of knowledge through a more efficient & personal contact, by helping people in a direct way where I can answer questions signficantly faster and can do a positive impact on some people’s lifes, by helping them to achieve more with the Columnstore Technology.

That’s why I decided to do a next step for 2019 – I am offering 1 hour of my Columnstore expertise per month (meaning 12 hours in total during the year of 2019) to anyone who wants it, with a HUGE preference for any no-profit companies (disclaimer: I do not distinguish between commercial and not-for-a-profit companies). How will it work? For each of the picked 12 people/companies, through email I shall set up a 1 hour call, during which I will answer their questions on the Columnstore Indexes & Batch Execution Mode, or any other Database related stuff – that I am capable to help with.
I will not be able to do more than 1 hour per company/person, because I am interested in spreading the knowledge and not in focusing the benefits on someone specific.
You might ask – how to sign up ? Contact me during the December of 2018 and explain why it should be you – if you are interested, you should be able to find a way. :)
Pro tip: if you will commit on sharing the informations further, your chances on getting picked will raise incredibly fast.

By the 31st of December 2018 I will notify and start working on reserving the dates with people.

    We work for PeaceHealth, a healthcare non-profit located in the Pacific Northwest. We have a critical vendor data warehouse that we recently upgraded to SQL Server 2016 Enterprise Edition. Ever since the upgrade many operations are slow, including DBCC, direct queries, executing stored procedures, etc. The main database is 1.1 TB and has over 150 clustered columnstore indexes. We could really use some help in figuring out the best way to manage the columnstore indexes on this system as we’re new to columnstore indexes. The vendor asked us to reorg the columnstore indexes, which temporarily improved performance. The next day index fragmentation is back up, presumably because they had approximately 30 million records updated, which may be a normal occurrence. We’re researching the best methods to manage these indexes and understanding this feature better.
    Questions on Clustered Columnstore Indexes:
    1. When should columnstore indexes be reorganized and when should they be rebuilt?
    2. Why is it necessary to do a reorg twice?
    3. Does a rebuild create index fragmentation?
    4. When and how often should statistics be updated? We use Ola Hallengren’s solution for index and statistics maintenance but we’ve been told this doesn’t work as well for columnstore indexes.

    I love to share my knowledge on SQL Server so I’m planning on starting to blog on SQL Server soon. If picked I will definitely do a blog telling how this helped us!
